According to the HK Breast Cancer Foundation, although it is more likely for mature women to be diagnosed with breast cancer, the risk of young women getting breast cancer has increased. The youngest breast cancer patient in Hong Kong is less than 25 years old. Knowing what you are up against makes cancer prevention much easier. blüüm woman will share the different types of breast cancer. The 4 major types of breast cancer can be determined by the tissue sample from your breast biopsy determines your breast cancer type.
Amongst all breast cancer patients, 1 out of 5 test positive for HER2.
HER2（Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2)-positive breast cancer cells are those with HER2 gene amplification or HER2 protein overexpression. It is a type of highly invasive breast cancer that spreads quickly. Before targeted therapy drugs are available to inhibit HER2 protein, the survival rate of HER2 patients is lower than other breast cancer patients. Surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and radiation therapy may be used to treat HER2-positive breast cancer.
HR (Hormone receptors) are a protein on the surface of cells that can attach to hormones. Breast cancer cells may be affected by one or both hormones (estrogen and progesterone) that help the growth of cells. HR+ cancer cells have one or both hormone receptors (estrogen receptors and progesterone receptors). If test results show no hormone receptors, then hormonal therapy will not be effective.
Under normal circumstances, a breast cancer diagnosis will conduct these 3 tests first. This includes testing the 2 hormone receptors and HER2 receptors to decide the treatment for the patient. According to the 3 tests, breast cancer can be divided into these 4 categories.
This type of cancer has an abundance of HER2 protein and hormone receptors. Both are tested positive and treatment targeting HER2 protein and hormone receptors may be used.
In this type of cancer, the cancer cells have an abundance of HER2 protein, but a negative result towards hormone receptors. Treatment against HER2 protein can be employed. Hormonal therapy will not be effective.
Only 10-15% of breast cancer cases are triple-negative. Compared to other types of breast cancer, this type spreads more easily to other organs and has a higher recurrence risk.
Triple-negative breast cancer means it tests negative for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER2 protein. Both HER2 targeted therapy and hormonal therapy will not be effective. Treatment usually involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. PARP inhibitors and immunotherapy are also useful in some cases.
